The recurring pattern across these cases is not technical failure but conceptual misalignment. AI-driven personalization is optimised for responsiveness, not for relational integrity. Expecting it to produce trust as a by-product misunderstands both.

A more sustainable strategic approach treats personalization as a bounded intervention rather than an omnipresent layer. It asks not only whether a system can personalise, but whether it should in a given context, and to what extent. It recognises that restraint can be a source of credibility, not a sign of underutilisation.

Such an approach also reframes success metrics. Instead of maximising immediate response, it considers how personalization shapes users’ sense of agency, predictability, and respect over time. These dimensions are harder to quantify, but they are central to durable relationships.
